Obituary of Verna Jewell Burns Ray

Funeral services for Verna Jewell Burns Ray, 90, of Rosepine, will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at 10:00 am at the DeRidder Funeral Home, with Bro. Wayne Burns officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosepine Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday,  August 7, 2018, from 5pm until 9 pm, at the funeral home.

Verna, the daughter of Harry Holman Burns, Sr. and Alice Jewel Ashley Burns was born on June 19, 1928, in Goose Creek, TX. She passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2018, in Rosepine, LA.

 

Mrs. Ray was married 56 years.  She was wife, mother and partner to her husband, in their poultry farm. Mrs. Ray was a member of DAV Auxiliary.  She served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years at Rosepine Baptist Church.

 

Mrs. Ray was an excellent gardener and loved working, watching the vegetables grow. Several of her grandchildren loved picking things from the garden with her and petting baby rabbits she raised.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Olvin Ray; brothers, Rouben Burns and Harry H. Burns, Jr. and her son-in-law, Gordon James.


She is survived by her sons, James O. Ray & wife, Sandy of AK and Richard D. Ray & wife, Sherry of Rosepine; daughters, Ruth Ray of Rosepine, Myra Ray of Lafayette, Vera Jones & husband, Ricky of Anacoca and LaNam James of Rosepine, LA; brother, Wayne Burns of AK; sisters, Barbara Vachula of AK, Mary Alice Strange of Deville and Miriam Brister of AK; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
