Obituary of Helen Christine Welker
DERIDDER, LA – Celebration of Life services for Mrs. Helen Christine Schales Welker, 87, will be held Monday, June 4, 2012, in the Hixson Funeral Home Chapel, DeRidder, LA, with Rev. George Glass officiating. Interment will immediately follow on the grounds of Hopewell Cemetery, DeRidder, LA. The family will be receiving guests for visitation Monday, June 4, 2012, from the hours of 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 4:00 p.m. at Hixson Funeral Home.
Helen was born December 8, 1924, in Center, AR, to the late Dewey and Ruth Bonhill Schales and was called to her Heavenly home June 3, 2012, in DeRidder, LA. She worked as a nurse's aide for several years at Anderson General Hospital, Anderson, Indiana and at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder, LA. Helen collected dolls for many years – many of which she donated to the Beauregard Parish Doll Museum. She received a certificate for OB Tech. training and helped kids in reading at Carver Elementary. Helen will be missed by those who knew her as a kind, loving and giving individual.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; Don Zimmerman (Killed in World War II), Andy Long, and George Welker, daughter; Mary Lee Long Scott, three brothers; Stanley, DeWayne, and Douglas Schales. Left to cherish Helen's memory and share her stories will be three sons; Jim Long and wife Debbie, Tom Long, and Jeff Long; one son-in-law; Allando Scott, two sisters; Glenda Schales Doyle and husband John, Carolyn Schales Simmons and husband Phil, five brothers; Leonard Schales and wife Jean, J.D. Schales and wife Georgia, Franklin Schales and wife Nina, Orvis Schales and wife Marlene, Merlin Schales and wife Maxine, three sisters-in-law; Avis Schales, Dorothy Prince, and Barbara Bond, 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren,1 great-great grandchild, along with many extended family members and numerous loving friends.
